Followingof the Greater Toronto Area used car market, the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) praised W5’s story for drawing attention to “the dangers posed by curbsiders (illegal, unlicenced dealers); and an apparent lack of compliance by some registered dealers with Ontario’s advertising and disclosure regulations.â€
“Each year we welcome the APA/W5 report,†said Terry O’Keefe, OMVIC Director of Communications,
“A light shone on the deceptive practices of curbsiders and questionable representations of some registered dealers is a good disinfectant; and just as importantly, it helps educate consumers.â€
In the release OMVIC – which regulates dealers and salespersons on behalf of Ontario’s Ministry of Consumer Services – announced it had conducted its own undercover investigations of dealers featured in the W5 report and had laid charges for alleged breaches of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act or the Consumer Protection Act against six GTA dealers and five individuals.
