HONG KONG - Canada has won a silver medal in Olympic equestrian team show jumping, after losing a jump-off with the United States.
Ian Millar of Perth, Ont., Jill Henselwood of Oxford Mills, Ont., Eric Lamaze of Schomberg, Ont., and Mac Cone of King City, Ont., finished second with a two-day total of 20 regulation jumping faults plus four in the jump-off.
The U.S. won gold when their first three riders executed clean rounds in the jump-off. Henselwood, Canada's lead rider, had picked up four faults.
Norway won bronze.
It was Millar's first medal in nine Olympic appearances.
The Canadians competed with just three riders Monday as Cone had to withdraw after his horse, Ole, sustained a minor injury during Sunday's first round.
"It sure does put you at a disadvantage," Millar said beforehand. "But it is not uncommon in this sport to compete with three members."
Canada came into the event's second day tied with Britain for fourth at 16 jumping faults, three back of third-place Sweden's 13.
Millar and Henselwood both had clear rides to send the Canadians to the jump-off.
Four riders compete for each team with the best three rounds to count. When a fence is knocked down, the horse steps in the water jump or refuses a fence, it counts four faults.
There are also penalties for exceeding the time limit.
