KHARTOUM, Sudan -- The International Committee of the Red Cross says it is to resume its work in Sudan after authorities lifted a suspension of its activities.
Khartoum on Feb. 1 imposed the suspension, saying the aid organization was not complying with national laws.
At the time, the state SUNA news agency quoted Sudanese officials as saying the Red Cross was operating outside the framework provided by international agreements, without giving details. The Red Cross had over 700 staff in Sudan, locals and expatriates.
Jean-Christophe Sandoz, head of the ICRC delegation in Sudan, said Monday that its "priority is to have our staff back on the ground as quickly as possible."
He says the ICRC will start by assessments of needs in Sudan's conflict areas, because the humanitarian situation has changed since February.
