FREDERICTON - One of America's 15 most-wanted fugitives will be held in a New Brunswick prison until at least the end of the week.

Richard Lee McNair, a convicted killer, was captured near Campbellton on Thursday, about 18 months after escaping from a Louisiana prison. Canadian Border Services Agency spokesperson Laurie Gillmore says a detention hearing was held for McNair Monday and it was determined that he poses a risk to the public and is a flight risk.

That means he will continue to be held at the maximum-security Atlantic Institution in Renous until at least Friday when Immigration officials have scheduled an admissibility hearing.

Gillmore says officials will then decide if McNair has any grounds to stay in Canada, or if he should be turned over to U.S. authorities.

Law enforcement officials in the United States say they're anxious to put McNair back behind bars, and will likely house him at a super-maximum-security prison because of his history of escapes.
