OTTAWA - The Conservatives don't like a Supreme Court judgment that restricts use of drug-sniffing dogs and are hinting they'll draft legislation to expand such searches.
Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day says the government will follow the ruling but must also protect high-school students and the general public from drug pushers.
The Supreme Court ruled last week that random dog searches in high schools, bus depots and other public places violate privacy rights.
The judgment says police must have a reasonable suspicion of a specific crime before calling in dogs for a search.
Day says he's concerned the ruling could lead to challenges of dog searches at airports even though they're already allowed under federal law.
He says dogs will be used at airports, border points and in prisons while the government studies how the judgment affects other public spaces.
