ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A radiologist at the centre of a health-care scandal in Newfoundland has quit and withdrawn an appeal of his suspension.

Dr. Fred Kasirye was suspended in May without pay after colleagues at the Burin Peninsula Health Centre in southern Newfoundland raised questions about his procedures and decision-making.

The provincial government then ordered a review of nearly 3,800 patient records under Kasirye's purview, which found that he missed glaring problems such as tumours, cases of pneumonia and broken bones.

It discovered that Kasirye misread 708 of 6,412 exams during the six months he was employed at the hospital.

Deborah Collins, a spokeswoman with the Eastern Health Authority, says Kasirye quit and withdrew the appeal of his suspension in early December.

Eastern Health, the province's largest health board, is also the subject of a judicial inquiry and class-action lawsuit in a separate matter involving flawed breast cancer test results given to more than 300 patients.
