SURREY, B.C. - Steve Fonyo has been given an 18-month conditional sentence after pleading guilty to several charges in a Surrey, B.C. court.
He admitted to uttering threats against his wife, defrauding a store by making a fraudulent return and using an unauthorized credit card three times to buy gas.
Fonyo married Lisa Greenwood last August at a Victoria beach named in his honour after he completed a cross-Canada run in 1985 to raise money for cancer research.
The man who lost a leg to cancer raised $14 million in the effort to complete a run started by Terry Fox in 1980.
Fonyo earned the Order of Canada for his run, but it was rescinded last year because of his multiple criminal convictions that included assault and drunk driving.
