The first two weeks of the World Cup have been drama-filled, with fantastic goals, stunning upsets, wild fans, and even wilder players (Luis Suarez). And with this being the most digitally connected World Cup ever, there has been no shortage of viral fodder from the tournament to feed social media.

With the field narrowed down to 16 teams and just over two weeks left to go, here's a look at five viral stories that have emerged from the tournament so far:

1) Upsets and underdogs

This year's tournament has seen the fall of some major soccer heavyweights, but also surprising runs from teams initially seen as non-contenders.

First, there was the stunning collapse of the defending World Cup championship Spanish team, which lost to the Netherlands and Chile, sealing its early exit from the tournament. Spain eventually went on to beat Australia 3-0 in a meaningless game, before leaving Brazil.

Portugal also bowed out of the tournament, after failing to qualify for the second round despite beating Ghana 2-1. Portugal's departure means the end of the World Cup road for one of soccer's biggest stars Cristiano Ronaldo.

Before its match against Ghana, Portugal was nearly defeated by the U.S. team in a nail-biting game that saw the two teams draw, only after Portugal's Silvestre Varela scored in the 81st minute.

Meanwhile, the U.S. team has advanced to the Round of 16, after beating Ghana and losing to Germany. The 2-1 win against Ghana marked the first time the American team beat the Ghana team in three different world cup meetings.

2) Van Persie's flying goal

A spectacular goal scored by Dutch player Robin Van Persie in a match against Spain lit up TV screens around the world early on in the tournament.

Then, almost immediately after, the goal was clipped, tweeted, and meme-ified on the Internet.

It even spawned its own hashtag called #Persieing, often accompanied with photos of fans from around the world mimicking his Van Persie's incredible goal.

And one artist even created a flip book of the goal.

3) Suarez bites opponent

All the fantastic play was marred when Uruguay's Luis Suarez appeared to bite Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini's shoulder during a match between the two countries.

The incident happened late in the game, with the world's TV cameras capturing the split-second chomp.

After it was over, both Chiellini and Suarez lay on the field, with Chiellini gripping his shoulder and Suarez inexplicably holding his teeth.

Needless to say, the Internet was quick to react.

Even retired American boxer Evander Holyfield, who was famously bitten by opponent Mike Tyson in 1997, weighed in on the incident.

Suarez wouldn't confirm or deny allegations that he bit Chiellini, but did say that he was angry during the game because Chiellini had hit him in the eye.

Eventually, FIFA punished Suarez for his actions, banning him from all football activities for four months, as well as Uruguay's next nine international games. This is the third time Suarez has been banned for biting an opponent.

4) Japanese fans cleaning the stadium after they lost

Amid the drama on the field, there have also been some great stories emerging from the stands among the fans.

This was shown when Japanese fans, heartbroken after the Ivory Coast beat Japan 2-1 in the opening round, stayed after the game to help clean the stadium stands.

Fans of the Japanese team had brought blue plastic garbage bags with them to the game, and were seen using them as balloons to cheer.

Then, after the match, photos emerged on Twitter of the fans using those same blue plastic bags to collect trash from the rows of empty stadium seats.

5) Mexico Head Coach celebrates, world falls in love

Mexico Head Coach Miguel Herrera has been getting some love online after fans noticed his penchant for joining in on the celebrations with his team after a big win.

Herrera has a lot to celebrate, with Mexico having advanced to the Round of 16 after beating Croatia, drawing with Brazil and beating Cameroon, and it's evident that he's not scared to show just how happy he is.

Take a look at some of his best moments from the tournament so far:

Herrera's tendency to show lots of emotion on the pitch even inspired an animator to make a highly entertaining GIF of the coach electrifying himself and setting his hair on fire.

The creator of the gif even released a time lapse video showing how he created it.

Mexico and Herrera will hit the field again on Sunday when they face the Netherlands.
