FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Ottawa Senators have kicked off what could be a goaltender trading frenzy in the NHL.

The Senators traded Robin Lehner and forward David Legwand to the Buffalo Sabres for the 21st pick in the draft.

Ottawa was determined to deal either Lehner or Craig Anderson to make room for the "Hamburglar," second-half star Andrew Hammond.

Lehner went 9-12-3 with a 3.02 goals-against average and .905 save percentage last season before suffering a concussion.

In 86 career NHL games, the Swede has a 2.88 goals-against average and .914 save percentage.

Assistant general manager Pierre Dorion said between Lehner and Anderson, Ottawa had the best goalie on the market.

"Craig Anderson, arguably you can say he's one of the top 10 goalies in the league," Dorion said Thursday. "And Robin Lehner has the upside to be one of the top five goalies in the league."

With Lehner fetching a first-round pick, the goalie trade market has a compass. The prevailing opinion was that the first deal would spark more.

The Vancouver Canucks are looking to move either Eddie Lack or Jacob Markstrom, the New York Rangers could trade Cam Talbot and the Los Angeles Kings may deal Martin Jones.

New York is reportedly targeting two second-round picks for Talbot.
