The National Hockey League has presented its locked-out players with a proposal that, if accepted, could allow for a full 82-game season.
The NHL proposal suggests a 50-50 split of all hockey-related revenue and will ensure that players do not see a rollback of current agreements, League Commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters Tuesday.
Bettman added that he hopes to see the puck drop on a new season as early as Nov. 2. The offer proposes that each team hold one additional game every five weeks to accommodate a full season.
鈥淏eyond that I don鈥檛 want to get into the substance, other than to say, we believe that this was a fair offer for a long term deal and it鈥檚 one that we hope gets a positive reaction,鈥� he told reporters in Toronto.
For his part, NHL Players鈥� Association President Donald Fehr said he鈥檚 observed some 鈥渋mprovements鈥� with the offer but stressed that the union needs time to review the proposal.
鈥淲hat our hope is, after we review this, that there will be a feeling on the players鈥� side that this is a proposal from which we can negotiate and we can try and reach a conclusion,鈥� he told reporters.
According to Fehr, the proposed deal is for 鈥渁t least six years.鈥�
