Moncton man chases world record in juggling while running a marathon

Share

He鈥檚 a runner, a juggler and now Jean-Marc Doiron finds himself joggling 鈥 and chasing a world record.

You can catch him during his lunch break running through Moncton while juggling three balls in the air, a hobby he picked up recently.

鈥淏een so for a few weeks,鈥 Doiron said.

The father is already used to multi-tasking.

鈥淛ust raising two kids, I think every parent knows how challenging that is. Just to fit in training, I鈥檝e been doing on my lunchbreaks,鈥 he said.

Currently, his eyes aren't just on ball-juggling, but on a world record 鈥 one he hopes to beat.

The world record for the fastest joggling marathon was set by Port Hope Ontario鈥檚 Michal Kapral in 2007. Kapral finished the race in two hours, 50 minutes and 12 seconds.

鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to believe it鈥檚 been seventeen years but it鈥檚 a tough one,鈥 Kapral told 麻豆传媒 on Wednesday.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of suffering even though it鈥檚 a very funny sport. It鈥檚 really, really painful. So I wish him the best.鈥

Last fall, Doiron ran Toronto鈥檚 marathon without juggling in about two hours and 32 minutes.

鈥淢y initial calculation was if I can be in, like, 2:35 shape, then have the juggling and everything cost me about 10 minutes, I鈥檒l be in the 2:45 range. That鈥檚 just kind of a rough estimate,鈥 he said.

Doiron contacted the Guinness World Records and hopes to race in Fredericton鈥檚 marathon in May.

鈥淚 need to have a video of the full attempt so I鈥檒l be running with a GoPro to my chest,鈥 he said, noting that two witnesses, including the race director, must submit official witness statements.

He鈥檚 been in touch with another joggler in the Maritimes 鈥 Micheal Bergeron, who holds Guinness World joggling records for the half marathon, and 10 kilometre race.

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 Google how to train for a juggling marathon,鈥 Doiron said.

The secret is speed and consistency.

鈥淚f I drop a ball, I have to like pick it up, run back to where I dropped it. So if it rolls a bit I have to take a few steps back,鈥 Doiron said.

For the joggler, it鈥檚 not all about the competition.

鈥淚t just makes people smile. It makes me smile and it鈥檚 like a fun thing to do,鈥 Doiron said.
