LONDON -- UEFA says Chelsea defender John Terry has had the third game of his three-match ban for violent conduct deferred for three years, making him available for selection for the start of the group stage of the Champions League.

Terry, who was shown a red card during the second leg of the Champions League semifinal against Barcelona in April after striking Alexis Sanchez in the back with his knee, served the first match of his ban during the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

He will serve the second during the Super Cup match against Atletico Madrid on Aug. 31, but Uefa says Monday that "the third game of the ban will now be deferred on a probationary period."
