RIO DE JANEIRO -- A medal of every colour gave Canada its biggest one-day medal output at the Rio Games on Friday.
Rosie MacLennan defended her gold medal in women's trampoline, Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee rowed to silver in the lightweight double sculls and Hilary Caldwell produced a backstroke bronze in the pool.
At 10 medals -- two gold, two silver and six bronze all generated by women -- Canada ranked 12th in the overall medal count Friday. A top-12 ranking in the total medal count is the goal in Rio.
The Canadian team totalled 18 medals -- including one gold -- four years ago in London.
The good:
-- MacLennan is first Canadian to defend a gold medal in an individual Olympic event at a Summer Games.
-- Victoria's Jennerich and Obee produce their country's first rowing medal in Rio.
-- Caldwell of White Rock, B.C., won the swim team's sixth medal in seven days.
-- The women's soccer team gets through to the semifinals with a 1-0 win over France in Sao Paulo.
-- Mandy Bujold of Kitchener, Ont., moves into boxing quarter-finals with a 3-0 decision over Yodgoroy Mirzaeva of Uzbekistan.
-- Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., stays in contention shooting an even-par 71 in the second round of mens gold and is five shots back of the lead.
The bad:
-- Toronto's Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, B.C., lose men's doubles tennis bronze-medal match in straight sets to Americans Steve Johnson and Jack Sock.
-- Vanouver race walker Inaki Gomez fades to 12th after he was in medal contention for 18 of 20 kilometres.
-- The men's four rowing crew finish sixth, calling into question Rowing Canada's strategy to scrap the men's eight in favour of the four and quadruple sculls, which didn't make their final.
Ones to watch Saturday: Toronto's Penny Oleksiak goes for a fifth medal in the women's medley relay; Victoria's Ryan Cochrane swims 1,500-metre freestyle final; star sprinter Andre De Grasse out of the blocks in the 100-metre heats: Women's team pursuit in track cycling; women's rowing eight.
