Denis Shapovalov’s debut at Wimbledon came to a quick end Monday, as the up-and-coming Canadian tennis star fell to Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz in their opening round match.

Shapovalov, ranked 193 in the world, lost to Janowicz in four sets: 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.

The Canadian lefty was playing his first Grand Slam main draw match after becoming one of 16 players to be granted a wild-card entry in the men’s singles event.

TSN’s Mark Masters called the loss “a tough one†for the 18-year-old Shapovalov, noting the Canadian won the same number of points as his opponent, but ultimately lost in four sets.

Shapovalov won the Wimbledon boys’ junior championship last year, and many were watching to see what he could do at his first tournament at the All-England Club, reports TSN’s Masters.

The loss will likely serve as “a learning experience†for the young Canadian, Masters said, and give him something to build on.

“He’s really turning a lot of heads, and that’s one of the reasons organizers game him a wild card. They see a lot of potential in this young kid and today was a good stepping stone as he moves forward,†Masters told Â鶹´«Ã½ Channel from Winbledon.
