Canadian Ellie Black wins silver medal at gymnastics World Cup event

TOKYO -- Canadian Ellie Black won silver on Sunday at the 2019 artistic gymnastics World Cup while American Morgan Hurd took gold.

Asuko Teramoto of Japan won the bronze.

Hurd took gold with a total score of 55.099. Black had 55.032 and Teramoto scored 54.799 overall.

Black landed the top score on the beam at 13.733, putting herself in first place heading into the final rotation on floor. A small step out of bounds on her floor routine pushed her into the silver medal position with a score of 13.266.

Black started off the competition with a second-best score a 14.500, then recorded the second-best score on bars (13.533) behind Hurd.

"I was just looking to come out and show some of my best gymnastics and to have fun," said Black. "The highlight of the competition for me was being able to compete with the team in the audience and to have that Canadian support from the crowd, and I was pretty happy with my vault because I stuck it.

"It was a great competition -- really fun, and a great experience."
