BOSSASO, Somalia - A British oil worker employed by a Canadian-based company has been freed after being abducted in northern Somalia.

A Somali official says one of the abductors was killed and another wounded in what he said was a rescue operation by Somali troops.

Farah Abdi Hussein of Somalia's Energy and Minerals Ministry, says the oil worker is a British citizen, not Pakistani, as earlier reported.

Hussein is the ministry official who liaises between the Somali government and Canadian-based Africa Oil Corp.

Foreigners are often targeted for abduction and ransom in Somalia.
