Global sales of the PlayStation 4 reached 2.1 million after the console launched in international regions on Nov. 29.

The figure follows a 1 million tally reached when the PlayStation 4 made its debut in North America on Nov. 15.

"It's an impressive and record-setting accomplishment for our company and for our industry, and we couldn't have done it without you," wrote Sony Computer Entertainment's president Andrew House on the PlayStation's EU and US blogs.

Sales for Microsoft's Xbox One are also strong, with the entertainment console at 1 million sold after its Nov. 22 launch in 13 territories around the world; the media center machine also beat the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 for sales over the Black Friday weekend with a 31 per cent share of console sales, according to retail data analytics firm InfoScout.

"Next year I'd say Sony out-sells Microsoft by 25 per cent, so probably 12 million to 9 million or something," said industry analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities, speaking on GameTrailers' "Bonus Round" show. "And I think Sony keeps the lead until Microsoft cuts the price or explains to us why that Kinect is actually worth an extra hundred bucks."

That'll be the case until both consoles cost the same, he predicted.

"I think Microsoft, in a year or two, will cut price. They'll be priced the same, they'll sell neck and neck. Sony gets an early lead, Microsoft claws its way back."

"Both will be bigger than the last cycle, because the Wii U is only going to sell 20 per cent as many units as the Wii -- there's a lot of market share to catch."
