REGINA - The Saskatchewan government says it will be forced to abandon plans for a new stadium in Regina unless Ottawa approves funding by the end of February.
Ken Cheveldayoff, minister responsible for the proposed multi-purpose facility, set the deadline in a letter to federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.
Cheveldayoff says a land agreement with CP Rail at the proposed site of the $430-million stadium is about to lapse.
The facility would replace Mosaic Stadium where the Canadian Football League Saskatchewan Roughriders now play.
The province applied for funding from the federal government last June.
But the decision has been on hold while Ottawa decides if it will support such applications.
Quebec has also asked for federal money for a new arena in Quebec City.
