ANKARA, Turkey - Media reports say a roadside bomb believed to have been planted by Kurdish rebels killed at least nine soldiers Wednesday in southeastern Turkey.
Various media outlets say the bomb was detonated by remote control as a military vehicle was traveling on a road linking the mainly Kurdish cities of Diyarbakir and Bingol.
The attack was the deadliest assault in months by the Kurdish rebels belonging to the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.
The guerrillas stage hit-and-run attacks on Turkish targets, often from hideouts in northern Iraq.
CNN-Turk said 10 soldiers were killed, but the state-run Anatolia News agency put the death toll at nine.
There was no immediate word on any injuries.
The PKK has been fighting for self-rule in Turkey's southeast since 1984 in a conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people.
In the past year, Turkey has launched several aerial attacks and one major ground operation against rebel bases across the border with Iraq.
