WATERLOO, Ont. - BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (TSX:RIM) has acquired German social game developer Scoreloop in a bid to boost development of social and collaborative gaming applications for its devices.
RIM says on its developer's blog that Scoreloop will help its developer community "take gaming to a new level of social integration" on BlackBerry platforms.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Munich-based Scoreloop has developed a gaming "ecosystem" aimed at building communities designed to generate revenue from mobile games.
Its products allow programmers to build connections from games to social media through virtual currencies, global leaderboards and product promotions.
RIM, based in Waterloo, Ont., has been had a stiff fight in the last few months from technology giant Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), whose hugely popular iPad is in direct competition with RIM's less well-received PlayBook tablet.
And on Monday, Apple announced iMessage for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, an instant chat app for exchanging text messages, photos and videos that mimics much of what BlackBerry users have come to love about the popular BlackBerry Messenger program.
