EDMONTON - A federal report into the slaying of four Alberta RCMP officers wants beefier body armour be issued to members across the province.

The report also recommends officers working at night be issued night-vision goggles and have better radio communications.

Supt. Rick Hanson says body armour has already been handed out in Mayerthorpe, but further study is needed before the program is expanded.

Hanson says research is still being done on the most effective type of the heavy armour that RCMP officers should use to protect themselves from long gun fire.

Known police-hater James Roszko ambushed four officers near Mayerthorpe, Alta., in 2005, while they were guarding evidence on his farm.

Constables Peter Schiemann, Brock Myrol, Leo Johnston and Anthony Gordon were killed.
