MONTREAL - Quebec is intensifying its efforts to fight white-collar crime following a string of financial scandals that have hit the province in recent years.

Quebec's financial, justice and public security ministers, representatives from the provincial police and the province's top financial regulator laid out a plan to make Quebec a leader in fighting financial fraud in Montreal today.

Quebec's securities regulator will develop a team specializing in cyber-surveillance and will launch a publicity blitz in the fall aimed at educating the population.

Provincial police will dedicate more officers to investigating allegations of corruption, money laundering, fraud and embezzlement throughout Quebec.

Provincial Finance Minister Raymond Bachand has also announced plans to ensure victims of financial crimes will have enough money to pay for food and lodging but says it would be too expensive to compensate them fully for their losses.

Justice Minister Kathleen Weil has also proposed raising minimum sentences for white-collar crimes.
