Prince Philip, the 86-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II, is in a London hospital seeking treatment for a chest infection, Buckingham Palace said Friday.
The palace said Philip checked into a London hospital on Thursday to request an examination. He had been suffering from a cold for three or four days without showing signs of improvement, the palace said.
He is reportedly in good condition and spent Friday working on paperwork from his hospital bed, according to CTV's London Bureau Chief Tom Kennedy.
Officials at King Edward VII's Hospital in central London refused comment.
Kennedy said Buckingham Palace seems confident about the Prince's health, particularly as he is considered to be in very good health for his age.
"A lot of people who are half his age wish they looked half as good," Kennedy told Â鶹´«Ã½net on Friday. "When you are 86 years old you do take these precautions."
Philip did not attend a memorial service on Wednesday for Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to climb Mount Everest, because he had a cold.
He has cancelled his engagements for the upcoming weekend, but not for next week.
Originally a member of the Greek royal family, Philip married Elizabeth in 1947. He renounced his title in Greece that year when he became a naturalized British subject.
Philip is also a great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria. His paternal grandfather, King George I of Greece, was Queen Alexandra's brother.
After rising to the rank of lieutenant in Royal Navy during the Second World War, Philip abandoned his naval career once Elizabeth became queen. He is one of her privy counsellors but has no other constitutional role.
Kennedy said the prince's state of health will surely be at the forefront of the Queen's mind. Philip accompanies his wife - who has described him as her "rock" -- on all official visits.
