Independent MP Helena Guergis has been released from hospital following a car accident at CFB Borden in central Ontario Thursday.

Guergis, who is five-months pregnant, was at the military base outside Barrie for a funding announcement by Defence Minister Peter MacKay when the crash occurred.

According to a statement released by her office, the independent MP was being driven by her assistant Valerie Knight when they were "hit by a car going through an intersection."

"In light of this unfortunate incident, Helena and Val will be taking some time off to take care of their health and spend some time with family," the statement added.

Guergis was sent to Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston, Ont. for observation. Her husband, former Tory MP Rahim Jaffer, has called the pregnancy "high risk" -- in part because of her political stress.

Angele Foulds, at Guergis's consituency office, said the Simcoe-Grey MP was given the option of waiting for test results in hospital or at home.

Guergis opted to rest at home.

The day's incident is just the latest misfortune to hit the beleaguered MP. Guergis was kicked out of the Conservative caucus earlier this year when allegations of impropriety surfaced. The RCMP later said there was no evidence of wrongdoing.

The Tories have also chosen a Conservative candidate to run against Guergis in the next federal election.
