WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is urging Congress to not impose new sanctions on Iran.
An international deal was announced over the weekend for Iran to roll back its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Obama told reporters Monday that the agreement, "allows us to have the time and space" to negotiate a longer term deal.
The president says he wants to give diplomacy a chance. And if Iran does not live up to the terms, the international community will be in a strong position to respond.
Skeptics in Congress argue that tough sanctions are what brought Iran to the negotiating table in the first place and that it is too soon to ease that pressure.
