The House of Commons has passed a motion to condemn Islamophobia and have a House committee study how to prevent it.
MPs voted 201-91 on Thursday afternoon, passing the private member’s motion known as M-103. The motion had drawn criticism from some Conservative MPs who said it could stifle free speech. It also sparked heated debate across the country, with protests held in several cities over the past few weeks.
M-103 sponsor and Liberal MP Iqra Khalid received death threats for championing it.
The motion calls on the House of Commons to condemn Islamophobia and "all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination."
The Conservatives proposed an alternative motion last month, which deleted the word Islamophobia from the text. The Liberals voted that motion down.
Conservatives have argued that not defining the term Islamophobia in the motion could be construed to mean any criticism of Islam.
