The six CF-18s that are headed to the Middle East as part of Canada’s mission against ISIS militants in Iraq will come from CFB Cold Lake in Alberta.
The two CP-140 Aurora surveillance aircraft will come from CFB Greenwood in Nova Scotia, and the refuelling aircraft will come from CFB Trenton in Ontario, CTV’s Mercedes Stephenson reported Tuesday.
Canadian officials are still finalizing the details of the mission, which is slated to last for up to six months. However, it is expected that Canada will base its mission out of Kuwait, Stephenson reported.
The CF-18s will participate in airstrikes against ISIS targets alongside the United States and other coalition forces. Canada’s mission, however, does not include combat troops. The deployment does include some 600 ground support personnel for the aircraft.
Canadian jets will be ready to begin launching airstrikes within the next three weeks, Stephenson reported.
MPs will vote on a motion authorizing the deployment later Tuesday. The opposition parties do not support the motion, but it will pass with the Conservatives’ majority.
