OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators have retracted more than 150 Stanley Cup tickets sold inadvertently to suspected ticket brokers.
On Thursday, the Senators sold approximately 900 tickets for each home game in the final series. The tickets were sold in less than four minutes.
"This (retracting of tickets) is the right thing to do,'' Senators CEO Cyril Leeder said Friday. "We have found that scalping is much more prevalent today.
"In our case, we saw tickets being purchased at 10 a.m. and then being offered for resale at substantial premiums on various broker websites before noon.''
The Senators are holding the suspect tickets, but have given legitimate buyers the opportunity to validate their purchases within 48 hours.
"We want to ensure that Senators and NHL fans are buying our tickets and are attending our games,'' added Leeder. "Reselling Senators tickets is a clear violation of our ticket policies, but, more importantly, this type of broker/scalper behaviour is unfair to true hockey fans.''
The Senators have yet to announce how and when the retracted tickets will be resold.
