DRAYTON VALLEY, Alta. - The federal government is investing $1.7 million in research to enhance the quality of beef cattle.

MP Rob Merrifield made the announcement in Drayton Valley, Alta., on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.

The three-year project will use DNA and other genetic data to help producers identify, select and breed cattle that have higher fertility rates.

It is also intended to develop animals with superior growth and feed efficiency.

The results will be shared among beef industry groups including the Canadian Beef Breeds Council.

Merrifield says improved beef quality will make Canada more competitive on global markets.
