OTTAWA - After less than a year as Canada's ambassador in Kabul, Ron Hoffmann is moving on.

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon announced Monday that William Crosbie, a career diplomat who was assistant deputy minister in charge of consular services, will replace Hoffmann in Afghanistan.

Hoffmann will become ambassador to Thailand.

Cannon praised Hoffmann, who acted as diplomatic point man as Ottawa sketched out the objectives it wants to achieve before the military mission comes to an end in 2011.

Hoffmann also oversaw a near doubling of the number of Canadian civilians - diplomats, development workers and police trainers - working on Afghan projects.

A Foreign Affairs spokeswoman says two years is the average for such a high-profile posting.
