WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama says Republicans on the presidential campaign trail display casualness about war when they urge military action to halt Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Obama says the candidates do not have the same responsibilities he has. He says, "they are not commander in chief."

Obama made his remark in a news conference Tuesday where many of the questions centred on how he intends to respond to Iran's advances in nuclear technology.

Republican presidential candidates have accused Obama of being a fair-weather friend to Israel and weak on Iran.

Republican presidential candidates Rick Santorum on Tuesday said Obama's plan to proceed with diplomacy is "another appeasement, another delay,"

Candidate Mitt Romney said thugs and tyrants will only respect U.S. resolve backed by military might.
