CALGARY - A report prepared by an animal transport expert says no one is to blame for the death of a hippo that spent almost 30 hours in a truck during a transfer from Denver to the Calgary Zoo.

Hazina, a six-year-old female hippo, died last October from complications due to circulatory problems.

The report by veterinarian Jacques Dancosse says steps can be taken to reduce the chance of similar animal deaths.

He recommends regular stops to check on transported animals.

There should also be bigger crates to allow an animal to stand, lay on it side without being cramped and to be able to turn around.

At the time of the accident zoo officials said that Hazina spent more than 11 hours lying on her rear legs in a transport crate.
