HALIFAX - A Nova Scotia man is on the hook for $1.4 million in fines after he was convicted of possessing illegal tobacco.

Court was told that Graham Leslie Murphy, 42, of Smith's Settlement took delivery of almost 300 cases of illegal cigarettes from Quebec last January.

He was sentenced Tuesday on charges of violating the provincial Revenue Act and federal Excise Act.

Murphy has been placed under house arrest for the first seven months of his conditional sentence and will have to follow a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. for the balance of the 15-month term.

He has a year to pay the fine, one of the largest ever handed out in Nova Scotia for possession of contraband cigarettes.

Murphy could return to court before then to seek an extension, provided he has put something toward the fine, or he could opt to serve the default jail time of six months.
