WAGMATCOOK, N.S. - Band officials from the Wagmatcook First Nation say they have a lot to talk about when they meet with Nova Scotia Justice Minister Ross Landry in Halifax on Tuesday.

Brian Arbuthnot, the band's director of operations, says they will ask for a public inquiry into the shooting death of John Simon by an RCMP officer and a proposed one-year contract for regional policing on the reserve.

Simon died in hospital after being shot by an RCMP officer inside his home on Dec. 2, 2008 after his family had called police to say he was suicidal.

Members of Simon's family and band officials were not happy with the release of a report that cleared the officer involved saying he'd acted in self defence.

Earlier this month Chief Lester Peck and the six-member council voted to end the contract with the RCMP and propose a new agreement with the Cape Breton Regional Police Service.

The regional police are expected to take over policing from the RCMP on April 1.

Police chief Myles Burke says he's satisfied with the agreement hammered out, but it still requires ratification by all three levels of government.
