ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The trial for the first politician charged in Newfoundland and Labrador's spending scandal has been pushed back to next month.

Former Liberal legislature member Wally Andersen was charged with fraud, uttering a forged document and breach of trust in June after the province's auditor general accused him of overspending $344,465 in public money.

Andersen, a former cabinet minister who represented a riding in Labrador since 1996, resigned from politics earlier this month.

He did not appear in court today when his trial was set for Oct. 29.

Three other politicians from all parties and a bureaucrat also face charges in the scandal.

They are all alleged to have overspent their constituency allowances by a total of $1.6 million from 1997 to 2006.
