OTTAWA - Independent MP Helena Guergis has given birth to a boy.

Guergis and husband Rahim Jaffer, a former Conservative MP, welcomed their son Zavier Rahim Nizarali Guergis Jaffer early today.

Zavier weighed seven pounds, seven ounces.

The birth was a happy end to a difficult year for the couple.

Guergis was turfed from the Conservative caucus and her job as junior minister after it was revealed Jaffer was an associate of a Toronto businessman facing fraud charges at the time.

The charges were later dropped, but Jaffer and Guergis are still the subject of investigations by the lobbying and ethics commissioners relating to Jaffer's contact with government officials.

Guergis is one of a very small number of MPs who have given birth while in office.

A statement from her office said mother and son are doing well and the new parents plan to spend the holidays with their extended families.

"They ask that their privacy be respected during this time and look forward to sharing their bundle of joy with the world early in the new year."
