IQALUIT, Nunavut - A Nunavut man convicted of killing an RCMP officer has been sentenced to what the judge is calling "a living death."

Ping Kolola was found guilty Thursday of first-degree murder in the shooting more than two years ago of Const. Doug Scott in Kimmirut on Baffin Island.

Scott was shot in the head, at close range, as he sat in his police truck.

Justice Robert Kilpatrick told a packed courtroom that the law requires that Kolola, a 39-year-old father of six, be sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for at least 25 years.

Kilpatrick said the sentence marks "the end of living for Mr. Kolola and the beginning of his survival."

He also pointed out that the murder has deeply hurt everyone involved: community members, families, jurors and northern police officers.
