RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Brazil's biggest unions are planning a nationwide strike to demand better working conditions and improved public services in Latin America's biggest nation.

The strike is scheduled for Thursday across Brazil and it's expected to hit especially hard in Sao Paulo, the nation's biggest city and economic hub.

Unions promise to paralyze the city's transport systems . They were already blocking some bus services on Wednesday.

The strike follows mass nationwide protests hit Brazil last month. The demonstrations started over a 10-cent hike in transit fares in Sao Paulo and snowballed into a mass movement venting widespread public dissatisfaction over corruption and poor public services.

Unions organizing the strike are calling for improvements to Brazil's strained public transit, health and education sectors, agricultural reform and a reduced work day.
