MONTREAL - A union is set to issue a strike notice against the Via Rail passenger train service after workers across the country voted overwhelmingly in favour of labour action that could take place as soon as Sunday.

The Canadian Auto Workers union says a strike deadline has been set for Sunday morning, July 22, at one minute after midnight.

The CAW represents 2,600 Via Rail workers across Canada supplying on-board services, ticket agents and skilled trades.

Negotiations between the CAW and Via Rail have been taking place for several weeks and  reconvened Monday in Montreal.

The parties are being assisted by two federal conciliators.
