ANKARA, Turkey - The state-run Turkish news agency says police have detained more than 40 people in four cities in a nationwide crackdown against Kurdish rebels.

The Anatolia agency says police raided a pro-Kurdish party premises in Istanbul on Friday and rounded up 43 people in the cities of Ankara, Izmir and Batman.

The agency says those detained include members of a Kurdish rebel group, the Kurdistan Workers Party, which has been fighting for autonomy in the southeast since 1984.

It says some of the suspects have allegedly carried out a series of arson attacks in cities.

The crackdown coincides with a military operation in the southeast against the rebels.
