OTTAWA - The Stephen Harper government is set to breeze through a confidence vote today despite allegations of bribery and the potential of an RCMP investigation.

MPs are poised to vote on a Liberal amendment to the federal budget which would bring down the minority government if it passes. But the Liberals are not ready for an election, so they crafted the amendment to fail by including criticism of the NDP.

As a result, the NDP says it won't support the amendment.

New Democrats note there will be other opportunities to bring the government down over the coming weeks.

They also express exasperation that the Liberals can't take advantage of a political gift like the Chuck Cadman affair.

The Mounties have said they are reviewing a Liberal demand for an investigation into allegations that top Conservatives offered Cadman - a former MP - a financial inducement in connection with a key Commons vote in 2005.
