REGINA - For the second time in a month, federal NDP Leader Jack Layton has travelled to Saskatchewan to talk equalization.
Layton says last month's federal budget broke a promise to the province and residents deserve an explanation from their 12 Conservative MPs.
During the last election, the Conservatives promised to remove non-renewable resources from the federal equalization formula -- a change that would mean hundreds of millions of dollars for the province.
But in the March 19 budget, the Conservatives allowed for the option of removing resource revenues, but capped the amount of money paid out to provinces under the program.
Premier Lorne Calvert recently pointed out that means Saskatchewan is in line to receive a "big fat zero'' in equalization payments next year.
The federal New Democrats have not held a seat in Saskatchewan since the 2004 election when they were shut out for the first time since 1965.
