YANGON, Myanmar - Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will suspend campaigning for April 1 byelections for four or five days while she recovers from exhaustion.

A statement from the Nobel laureate's National League for Democracy party says Suu Kyi is suffering from exhaustion and stress, causing her to abruptly suspend her activities during a campaign trip over the weekend in southern Myanmar.

The party says Suu Kyi has been weakened by a rigorous schedule that has taken her all over the country to campaign for her party's candidates, who are running in 44 constituencies.

She is now recovering at her home in Yangon.

Monday's statement says a medical checkup in February found that Suu Kyi was in good health.
