CREEMORE, Ont. - The Conservatives welcomed a new candidate on Saturday in the riding belonging to banished MP Helena Guergis.

Kellie Leitch, 40, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, announced her bid for the Conservative party nomination in the riding of Simcoe-Grey for the next election.

Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and former Ontario Premier Bill Davis were in Creemore, Ont., with Leitch as she made the announcement.

Leitch's has advised the government in the past on policies such as the children's fitness tax credit.

Leitch says she already helps many children in her Simcoe-Grey community, but if elected she will be able to help thousands of children at a time.

Guergis plans to fight for her seat and run as an Independent Conservative in the next election.

Guergis was kicked out of cabinet and the Tory caucus last spring amid the furor over the business dealings of her husband, former Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer.

The RCMP cleared her of any wrongdoing

It's not clear when the nomination meeting will be held.
