TORONTO - Starbucks is recalling 167,000 coffee mugs in Canada and the U.S. because of a burn hazard.

A release from the U.S. coffee shop operator says the handles on the Fusion Coffee Mugs can detach and allow coffee to spill and burn the user. Starbucks has received 23 reports of handles coming off the mugs, including nine that resulted in minor burns.

It does not say if any of those incidents happened in Canada.

The mugs are the 14-ounce size, white with a black plastic handle, and a stainless steel base.

The cups have "Starbucks Coffee" printed on a black stamp, or a brown original Starbucks logo stamp.

The ones with a brown stamp were sold only at a Seattle location. Starbucks sold the mugs at stores from February 2007 through November 2007 for about $11.

They were made in China.

The Seattle-based company says consumers should immediately stop using the mugs and contact Starbucks for instructions on returning the cups for a full refund and a free beverage.
