RIO DE JANEIRO -- Canada's Eugenie Bouchard is out of the women's singles tennis tournament at the Rio Olympics.

The star player from Westmount, Que., lost in straight sets today to Germany's Angelique Kerber.

The second-seeded Kerber defeated Bouchard 6-4, 6-2 in the second round.

The 22-year-old Bouchard, who is making her Olympic debut, opened strong with an early break in the first set but Kerber managed to break back. Bouchard never recovered.

The Canadian still has a shot at a medal and an Olympic doubles title with Ottawa's Gaby Dabrowski.

The pair will square off against Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic in the second round.
