MONTREAL - A Quebec City-area Parti Quebecois member is expected to announce his resignation on Monday to clear the way for party leader Pauline Marois.

Charlevoix national assembly representative Rosaire Bertrand will make the announcement at a news conference with Marois in La Malbaie, Que., reports the French-language TVA network.

A quick byelection call would give Marois the opportunity to win a seat and sit in the national assembly when it resumes in October.

Bertrand has represented the riding for 13 years.

Marois was acclaimed leader in June after no one chose to run against her.
