Messages congratulating the Prince William and Catherine Middleton, the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, began pouring in as the couple tied the knot in a day full of pomp and pageantry in London.

Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen, who were invited but did not attend the wedding because of the federal election campaign, tweeted that they were extending their "heartfelt congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambrdige on their wedding day."

Governor General David Johnston and his wife Sharon, who were in London for the ceremony, issued a statement congratulating the couple.

"As a realm of the Commonwealth, Canada joins with the world in celebrating two hearts and souls coming together in the lasting bond of marriage. It is a time of great joy in our collective history," Johnston said in the statement.

"Sharon and I extend our warmest wishes to the couple on this momentous day. We look forward with much anticipation to joining with Canadians in welcoming them on their first Royal Tour as newlyweds."

Meanwhile, Britain's military media operations team at Camp Bastion, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, also tweeted their best wishes, saying "Everyone in Afghanistan is hard at work, but the telly is on and we are watching where we can. Congratulations to William and Kate."

Message of good luck came in even from astronauts from the Interntional Space Station, shortly after passing over the U.K. in orbit.

In their interstellar message, broadcast on the BBC, Flight Engineers Paolo Nespoli, Ron Garan and Cady Coleman said "from space, the Expedition 27 crew at the International Space Station would like to offer their congratulations and best wishes," they said ahead of the wedding.
