CUPIDS, N.L. - Prime Minister Stephen Harper dropped by the small, eastern Newfoundland town of Cupids today to announce more than $3 million in funding for the town's 400th anniversary.

Harper, on a two-day campaign-style swing through Newfoundland and New Brunswick, says the funding will help organizers mark the anniversary with a celebration in 2010.

The prime minister says the anniversary marks a historic year for what is believed to be the oldest English settlement in Canada.

Settled in 1610 by John Guy, it is considered second-oldest British colony in North America - Jamestown, Va., was settled in 1604.

Events planned for the celebration in Cupids include re-enactments, festivals and educational materials.

Quebec celebrated its 400th anniversary earlier this year.
