QUEBEC - A lawyer says police unfairly targeted former Quebec junior goaltender Jonathan Roy, who is facing assault charges for an on ice incident, because he has a famous father.

The ex-Remparts player was charged for skating the length of the rink and pummelling an opposing goalie during a March 2008 game.

He was suspended for seven games while his father Patrick Roy -- the head coach and part-owner of the Remparts -- got five games for encouraging his son to fight.

Roy's lawyer says his client is the victim of procedural abuse as the charges were filed four months after the incident, and just days after a directive was issued changing how charges are levied following sports brawls.

At a hearing today into whether the case should be dismissed, Saguenay police investigator Larry Boudreau admitted other players committed violent acts during the game.

He says only Roy caught the attention of police.
